A former teacher in a US high school is avoiding time in prison even after admitting to having sexual intercourse with two of her students, who are underage.
Haeli Wey committed underage sex with a student, 17 years old, over 10 times in only two months after a family trip to the African continent back in 2015.
The 28-year-old teacher also was involved with a second boy whilst in a campting trip in the summer of the same year, reported the New York Daily News. She even suggested he should bring a hammock with him on their hike.
Police stated: “The victim said while in Africa his relationship with Ms Wey become more personal and on a deeper level.
“The victim stated while in Africa their relationship became physical.”
Trial and Sentencing
She was just sentenced to probation for 10 years, as well as 200 hours of community service. Courts have not required her to register on the sex offender registry.
Larry Sauer, Wey’s lawyer, said to Fox 7 located in Austin, Texas: “The judge found that he had enough evidence to find her guilty but did not and placed her on a 10-year deferred adjudication probation.
“Basically it means that as long as she completes everything without any problems then the case will be dismissed and she will never have been convicted of a felony.
“Since this has gotten so much attention it’s … wearing on her. But I think she’s going to be fine.”
If Wey happens to breach her probation, she may face about up to 20 years in prison.
It has been reported that she also voluntarily surrendered the teaching certificate she has.
Wey had been arrested back in December of 2015, pleading guilty to having improper relationships last February.
